Abstract: This study sought to examine the mental abilities of professional ice hockey athletes and to determine if Orlick’s (1992), "Model of Human Excellence” could apply to them. Focusing on the timeframe 1967-2000 the article highlights how norms, values and ideals changed over time and contributed to a change from ice hockey as an amateur sport based on idealistic motives and volunteer efforts to a professional sport based on entertainment and commercial forces.
